McDermott's words should concern Leeds fans

Ouch. It would appear from Nice Guy Brian's carefully re-crafted words on the Official Site that he has had his conversation with Messrs Haigh and Patel and that he has been told not to expect much money to invest in the squad.

How else can you interpret his assertion that: "We want to upgrade the training ground as well. We want to build this football club. We want to make this a great football club again. It's not just about building a team. We need to build it from each stage from where we are to where we need to get to, and I'm really looking forward to the challenge. The training ground is a great facility, but we just think we can improve certain things to make it absolutely top class because we want things to be top class at Leeds United"?  To me, that sounds like a shift in priority away from the present squad and towards less expensive investment. There is also a whiff of revised timescales.

There's no mention here of chasing promotion next season, instead the notion of building "stage by stage" implies a much longer timescale. Let's get the training facilities right, then paint the Director's lounge the following season, then upgrade the public toilets the following season, then hopefully some of the kids will come through and we can start thinking of sending out a team fit to challenge for promotion.

Look at what McDermott is now saying about new signings! Instead of  the bullish mantra of getting deals done early, Nice Guy Brian sounds a much more sobering, some may say sombre note, when he warns, "I've also done a list of players I think will be good for the squad. Ideally, you'd like them in when you start pre-season, but my experiences of transfer windows are that things move slower than you'd like. What will be will be, and we will try and recruit the best we can."

Does that sound optimistic to you? Does that sound like a man who has been promised a transfer war-chest?  Does that sound like a man who expects to attract the best, or even the second best? "The best we can" sounds like somebody shopping in second hand stores because he is unable to afford Primark prices! Meanwhile, the "what will be will be" has a horribly fatalistic ring about it.

Leeds fans will protest that I am reading too much into this, but the contrast between this "on script McDermott" quoted on the Official Site, and the off script McDermott talking from the hip to the Press couldn't be more marked. He doesn't even say that the club and chasing his targeted players, simply that he thinks they would be good for the squad.

Maybe, just maybe, Nice Guy Brian is beginning to wake up to the truth that GFH Capital are not in a position to finance a push for the Prem. A case of 'Out of the Reading frying pan and into the Leeds fire!' perhaps.

  6. Keep it up, your analysis are all over brilliant. Are you a skysportpunter in disguise? If not, you will probably be headhunted for a top job at Skysports very soon. You are an absolute fantastic writer, and amuses us with knowledge in depth and cunning nicknames for everyone in football.

Keep it up and write, and please, don't waste your time on a girl

  8. I suspect he is trying to avoid the errors made by Warnock in piling pressure on himself and the squad.... Warnock wanted instant success which without millions to spend is impossible......Instead i think BigMac wants a longer term approach which I think most of us prefer. The key is to keep our youth players and blood them....If Leeds do that then we should well over the next few years. Unfortunately many leeds fans are deluded and think selling our best kids is ok provided we get decent money......as a West Ham fan you will probably know all too well what a pointless argument this is. Selling all your kids did not benefit west Ham....it only benefitted Chelsea and Man United

  9. You are constantly trying to second guess every statement that comes of out the club with the same boring agenda - that Leeds have no money, no ambition, etc. Do you not think Leeds fans know this already?! We've been out of the Premiership for ten years!

I've read your website before and you do occasionally express some astute opinions, but by and large it's fairly predictable sarcasm.

  10. Thanks for your wisdom. What would we do without your views, insight and knowledge? Im guessing you were a milk monitor at school and haven't achieved much more in life. Are you the bloke that everyone in the pub avoids due to your overbearing opinions?

  11. do you just write about leeds to try and wind people up or do you have a genuine interest in our great club?

  12. McDermott's a realist and with him things might be possible; such as promotion. However, we need a team with team spirit and that comes with time players spend playing together.

It's affair article; but he's the sort of bloke that you say 'Nice sunny day today!' and replies 'Yes, but tomorrow it's going to rain all day!!!'

  13. I realise I'm pandering to your insatiable desire to continue your 'look at me, look at me' blog style, but your infatuation with all things Leeds is bizarre. I take it that you've reached the conclusion that The West Ham fanbase is so pathetically small that writing about the team you support will not actually bring you the attention you crave.
Having realised that 'writing' about Leeds brings significant reaction, I guess the hits you crave mean you have to continue. or your pathetic little blog will fade into obscurity.

  14. I fail to see why investment in Thorp Arch is a bad thing. This kind of investment will help us maintain a great academy and training facilities. Nowhere in the above quote does Brian Mac suggest what your article seems to posit - i.e. infrastructure investment replacing spending on new players.

  15. Surely you've got to get bored of being a WUM by writing about LUFC soon? The day you do will be a very good day.

  17. Wouldn't surprise me one little bit mate...I just hope McDermott is not! Going to let GFH give him a load of bull**** if what you say is true I hope big Mc'd gives them a ultimatum! That if he doesn't get the players he needs! That's it and tells them I'm off have a good season...I wouldn't trust GFH as far as I could throw them...They want promotion but wont dont want to spend!...

  18. if brian doesnt get the required backing he should walk before the new season begins, and say sod you, maybe then we will find out exactly where we stand

  20. brians got this..

  21. at least we're safe in the knowledge that if west ham go for the same player as us there is no threat of them getting him, just ask there ex number one target stephen warnock

  23. If what you suggest comes to pass I hope BMD will just walk. If he does then even more LU fans will leave with him. GFH-C are walking a fine line now. After years of waffle and lies from 'ol Pissy pants the support will fall through the floor if the new owners don't deliver.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think I need to be concerned at all! I think we are going to make some positive moves! You have clearly written this after reading the tosh on the Leeds website but if you watch the video of B McD talking you will see what he means and feel very very positive!

Really getting fed up of all the whingers! Bates is president - get over it he cant do jack in that roll! GFH - good for the club! (they are not Ken Bates)! and as for the coming season and transfer market things look positive.

CHEER UP AND STOP SPOUTING NEGATIVE RUBBISH!

  26. Your concocted words don't worry any LU fan, it's easy to create fantises and bend meanings from other peoples words. You should be more concerned about WHU's future as you will never compete with Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs or Fulham in London. WHU are at best a mid table team with little chance of improving. Let's see if you can hold on to all your current players for next season which will indicate your teams ambition.

  27. for all Leeds united's failings, im still happy i support them over west ham.a team with no silverware or great times to look back on.

  29. It doesn't concern me as much as you, but what should concern you is having big Sam for another season, that's why you go on so much about us, it helps you block out how shit you are.

  30. Oh dear, analysis paralysis! You were doing really well this week HF and now you're coming acress all contrived and desperate for a negative angle again.

I think it was the famous French phylosopher Le Conte Marteau who once said, "over indulgence in another man's team can result in brain freeze". Or it might have been Dickens, I forget.

  31. So... how are west ham doing latley??
I'd have thought that as a west ham supporterm you'd spend time commenting on your team but instead you seem to have grown an uncanny obsession with Leeds. Seriously, just let it out. Tell the world that (quoting what you want to say) "I LOVE LEEDS UTD AND WEST HAME ARE A PONCE TEAM I AM ASHAMED TO HAVE EVER BEEN ASOCIATED WITH!"

  32. Just a sad hammers fan who deep down knows that Leeds will always be the bigger club.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You must be a mighty sad man if you spend all your time rubbishing all things Leeds, even more so you must be retarded if you think any leeds fan takes the slightest notice of your rantings. It must be very boring being a hammer...

  34. I'm happy with a slow build up and promotion when things are right. Why rush things; GHF will inevitably make a couple of bob along the way, that's what businessmen do in real life and in the meantime we have a credible manger that commands respect, has a decent pedigree and our youth policy remains the envy of the football world. The training facility at Thorpe Arch is already far superior to most in the Premier League but we do need some investment in the ground. The West Stand was built in 1957 and hasn’t seen a lick of paint since and if you want to attract punters you need to offer value for money on and off the pitch. We’ve been out of the top flight for ten years and we have all seen what a s*** or bust policy brings. We will get there but let’s have sustainable plan and not pander to our many sceptics who would love to see us achieve promotion and bomb straight back down. MOT
